Everyone loves Indian food. Not only people choose Indian restaurants for dining out or a weekend takeaway, it's also favoured by those who cook at home above other classic dishes. In fact, you can say it’s favoured by the whole country as UK celebrates the National Curry Week every October. But how much do you now about Indian food?

1. One in seven curries that are sold in the UK is Chicken Tikka Masala, which makes it the UK’s favourite Indian dish. However, did you know that Chicken Tikka Masala is not actually an Indian dish? It was invented in Glasgow, Scotland!

2. India is called the Land of Spices, because it’s the only country in the world that produces as many varieties of different spices (over 70% of the world’s spices come from India).

3. Potato, tomato and chilli are the staple ingredients of Indian cuisine but did you know that they were brought to India by Portuguese?

4. The first Indian restaurant in England was opened by Sake Dean Mahomed in 1810 in Central London.

5. A typical curry is made of cardamom, blend cinnamon, tamarind, cloves, cumin and garam masala.

6. Naan did not actually come from India. It’s been brought by the Mughals and it has Persian roots.

7. This one is an interesting one. The Indian Food Theory says that our food has 6 different flavours: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, astringent and spicy and a perfect Indian meal should be a balance of all 6 with one or two flavours standing out.

8. Pepper is the most important from all other spices as it goes well with everything.

9. Each region of India uses their own ingredients, spices and cooking methods to create a unique taste.

10. The hottest chilli in the world - bhot jolokia, also called “the ghost chilli” comes from India.
